Parking: The World’s Problem (Any Why It’s Not Important For Business). [Article Review]

Okay, just this once..

Wherever you go, there’s a parking challenge – usually. And what does it do to us? It conditions us to understand it is what it is !

In Brisbane, it’s a funny paradox of Developers wanting to reduce car requirements (cost saving) and Councils allowing it in Developments and Urban Planning (forcing people to use Public Transport) – however the infrastructure isn’t there to allow Public Transport (or say, bicycle commuting) to be use effectively and more importantly; pleasantly by the average person.

The reality of it all is that the challenge is here to stay, and luckily enough, people know it before they leave the house and it’s just “a thing”.

So, parking is not what it used to be, and enter an Article Review from TheConversation.com:

Parking isn’t as important for restaurants as the owners think it is

The article summary –

  • Survey focused on three major restaurant precincts in the city of Brisbane – Boundary Street, West End; Eagle Street in the city centre; and Caxton Street, Petrie Terrace.
  • Cross-analyse businesses’ perceptions with customers’ travel behaviour.
    • Evaluate the validity of restaurateurs’ perceptions about the importance of car travel and parking, along with perceptions about transport infrastructure needs.

Findings –

  1. One in three customers in our study walked and/or cycled to the restaurant precincts
  2. Almost half the customers arrived by public transport, including bus, train and ferry
  3. Customers who travel by car also bring in less revenue than the restaurateurs think
  4. The biggest portion of restaurant income (66%) came from customers who walked

In summary they said “Customers who walk, cycle or use public transport to get to the restaurant all contribute significantly more to trade than the business owners and managers realise.”

This is all before touching on the growing Uber market and the future of autonomous cars; so keep your customers walking!
